More than 60 children competed in a series of Tri-Golf skills games with points being awarded for each game. At the end of a very energetic afternoon the points were added together and the winning school was St Michaels with a magnificent 2,557 points, closely followed by Lyons Hall School with 2,446 points, and in third place was Beckers Green with 2,229 points.
Golf Foundation regional officer, Katie Cooper who organised the games, said “Once again our Tri Golf schools program was a great success; it was brilliant to see so many children enthusiastic about playing golf. The professional coaches from Braintree and Rivenhall Oaks Golf Clubs have done a great job in introducing golf to many young people across North West Essex. The development plan that is in place means that there will be plenty of opportunities for them to carry on participating at the golf facilities.”
Speaking about the coaching program Braintree Golf Club PGA professionals Duncan Woolger and Warren Sargent agreed that this is an excellent way to introduce children to the sport and encourage them to continue their development at the golf club.
Commenting about the program Braintree Golf Club General Manager, Tony Smith said that “this is the third year of the program and we have involved the teachers much more in the coaching. With the support of organisations like the Golf Foundation we have a real chance of raising awareness and participation from an early age.”
Chris Hopkinson, sports teacher from St Michaels thanked the coaches and the Golf Foundation and said that the schools really appreciate the work that has done by them and that involving the school teachers for the first time really made them feel able to contribute and they looked forward to the next program.
Judging by the amount of energy and the noise they generated the boys and girls really enjoyed the competition and just had an enormous amount of FUN.
